Wild three-team Padres trade proposal lands 8.7 WAR All-Star outfielder

At the MLB trade deadline, the San Diego Padres are looking to add a new left fielder. They've been continually trying to land Boston Red Sox left fielder Jarren Duran, but haven't had any luck.

That didn't stop former MLB general manager Jim Bowden in The Athletic from proposing a wild three-team trade which would bring Duran to San Diego without having to move one of their MLB starting pitchers.

"... or perhaps they could try a three-way trade with the Marlins where Boston would land Edward Cabrera from Miami," Bowden writes, "the Padres would get Duran and the Marlins would get prospects from both Boston and San Diego."

Such a trade proposal would have the Red Sox landing their ideal trade pickup, a controllable starter, while the Padres would land their ideal pickup as well in Duran.

Miami wouldn't be getting any Major-League help, but they would be getting plenty of prospects from both the Red Sox and the Padres. Outside of Leo De Vries, the rest of the Padres' farm system is up for grabs.

San Diego needs to find a left fielder by the deadline, and while the Red Sox wouldn't move Duran for anything other than a strong package, the Marlins could help facilitate a deal between both sides.

Boston would get their starter, while Miami would bring in a strong prospect package. For the Padres, Duran would be the perfect deadline pickup. While he hasn't performed at his 8.7 WAR 2024 season, he's still been good.

Through 100 games, Duran has 104 hits, 53 runs scored, 25 doubles, an AL-leading ten triples, eight home runs, 50 RBIs, 16 stolen bases, 34 walks, and 106 strikeouts. He's batting .257 with a .749 OPS and 107 OPS+.

He's a perfect leadoff candidate for the Padres, and even if he hits elsewhere in the lineup, he'd be a solid presence for the Padres amid their push to make it back to the postseason in 2025.

Duran is a great trade fit for the Padres, and while it'd cost a lot of prospects in this trade proposal, it'd be more than worth it to land such a great player at a position of need.

Bowden's trade proposal is a wild one, but it could be the best case scenario for the Padres and Red Sox at the trade deadline.
