Why Warriors, Hawks are both winners in Jonathan Kuminga for Kristaps Porzingis trade

ESPN's Shams Charania can't take any time off this time of year.

Late Wednesday night, he broke the news that the Golden State Warriors have finally traded Jonathan Kuminga in a deal also involving the Atlanta Hawks and Kristaps Porzingis.

The full terms, via Charania:

  • Hawks get: Jonathan Kuminga, Buddy Hield
  • Warriors get: Kristaps Porzingis

The Kuminga component here is one that everyone has been waiting for for a long time.

Hield adds his shooting stroke to the deal and helps match salary.

And the Warriors get an intriguing big guy in Porzingis, if he can get on the floor.

Why Warriors traded Jonathan Kuminga, and why Hawks wanted him

Kuminga just couldn't find a way to last in Golden State's rotation.

He was a top-10 pick, and his scoring ability is immense. But he didn't do enough else well for Steve Kerr to trust him consistently.

For the Hawks, though, it's a good upside swing. Kuminga is under contract for the 2026-27 season, too, so Atlanta gets a year-and-a-half to see how he can fit with them.

He's shown even in the playoffs that he can get buckets in big moments, and that's a risk worth taking for the Hawks.

Why Hawks traded Kristaps Porzingis, and why Warriors wanted him

The Hawks couldn't get Porzingis on the floor enough to benefit from his unique skillset, and they also have plenty of frontcourt depth.

The Warriors, on the other hand, could use another big.

Porzingis also fits their structure as someone who can space the floor and shoot it. Pick-and-pops with Porzingis and Steph Curry should be fun.

This deal has a chance to be a win for everyone.
