Royce Lewis was supposed to be the next face of the Minnesota Twins.
Instead, as of Tuesday, he's not even a part of the Twins' MLB roster.
The Twins have sent Lewis down to Triple-A St. Paul. It's not clear how long his trip to the minor leagues might be, but it's clear that it's disappointing.
Instead of shining in the majors, Lewis will have to try and rediscover himself at Triple-A.
Why did the Twins send down Royce Lewis?
Lewis simply hasn't been good enough to warrant continued starts at the MLB level.
This season, he's batting .163 with a .539 OPS. That's horrific.
It follows a 2025 season when he batted .237 with a career-worst .671 OPS.
Lewis has battled injuries for years, but for his first few seasons in the majors, he still put up solid numbers when he was able to make it on the field.
In the past year-and-a-half, Lewis has been atrocious no matter what.
Maybe the injuries have just battered him too completely to ever reach his potential.
The Twins will be hoping a chance down with St. Paul can help the former No. 1 overall pick rediscover himself, but that's easier said than done.
There's no telling what might happen with Lewis next, but what seems to be clear is he'll never become the player the Twins hoped they were drafting.
