Why the Hornets are trading Miles Bridges to Suns just days after LaMelo Ball trade to Timberwolves

It's been only a few days since the Charlotte Hornets traded LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Now on Sunday, the Hornets are staying busy. They're sending Miles Bridges in a trade to the Phoenix Suns.

This is what ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Sunday afternoon:

"The Charlotte Hornets are trading Miles Bridges, a 2029 first-round pick and a 2027 second-round pick to the Phoenix Suns for Grayson Allen, Royce O'Neale and a 2033 first-round pick, sources tell ESPN."

The Hornets have now traded away two of their most-known players in just a matter of days.

Why did the Hornets trade Miles Bridges to the Suns?

The Hornets are re-imagining their roster, and Bridges was aging out of the core.

Bridges is 28, but that made him the oldest rotation player that the Hornets have.

They're building their roster around Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller. They've got a lot of future picks. They've got salary cap space. This is a chance to grow for a bright future.

Trading away Ball signaled that this might not be their peak season, so they're seeing what kind of foundation they can create for the future.

"The Suns acquire a starting PF at 28 years old in Bridges -- whom they've targeted in recent years -- plus a 2029 less favorable first-rounder and a 2027 less favorable second rounder while getting $20 million in tax savings while opening up a roster spot ahead of free agency," Charania wrote on X. "Charlotte picks up two playoff-tested role players and receives a valuable further out, unprotected Suns first-round pick."

It's going to be worth keeping a further eye on Charlotte going forward. They might not be done.
