The Philadelphia Phillies have a strong roster and will be World Series hopefuls this season. It won't be easy, but the Phillies have what it takes to win it all.
With a roster that's mostly running it back, there are some reasonable concerns about how well the team will play in 2026. But there is some history on their side, thanks to the Team USA men's ice hockey team.
Team USA won the gold medal at the Olympics, the first gold medal in Team USA history since 1980, which just so happens to be the year the Phillies won the World Series. If the Phillies team history repeats itself, Philadelphia will be the World Series champions.
Phillies get good news from Team USA winning gold at Olympics
The Team USA ice hockey team, for the first time since 1980, won the gold medal. This win fittingly happened 46 years to the date as the Miracle on Ice in 1980.
The Phillies in 1980, after the men's ice hockey team won gold, went on to have a 91-71 record, finishing first in the NL East, and going to the World Series, beating the Kansas City Royals 4-2.
In 2008, the Phillies won their second World Series title. The Team USA Men's hockey team wasn't participating thanks to the Olympics occurring two years later in 2010, when they won silver.
There is only one other gold medal for the Team USA men's ice hockey team, which occurred in 1960. That wasn't the best season for the Phillies, as they went 59-95, finishing last in the National League.

In the Phillies franchise history, they either win it all or finish in last place when the Team USA men's ice hockey team wins gold at the Olympics.
This upcoming season, of the two possibilities, the Phillies winning the World Series is more likely than finishing last in the NL.
While 1980 was a one-off coincidence, the Phillies do have World Series potential this year. If all goes well, they'd be top contenders.
History tends to repeat itself, and hopefully for the Phillies, just like they did in 1980, they can win the World Series after the Team USA men's ice hockey team won gold at the Olympics.
