Why Sharks waited to give Michael Misa his NHL debut

4 hours ago 2

Michael Misa had to wait a bit.

The San Jose Sharks played two games with their No. 2 overall pick just watching, falling twice in overtime.

But on Tuesday night, Misa will get to make his NHL debut as the Sharks take on the Carolina Hurricanes.

San Jose is at home, a great chance for their rookie wearing No. 77 to take the NHL ice for the first time in the regular season.

Misa told Sheng Peng that his parents and his brother (Luke, a Penn State hockey player) will be at the game.

Peng's story added the message from head coach Ryan Warsofsky to Misa:

“Go enjoy it. Have fun. You only get one NHL debut. He looked good in practice today too. You can see a little extra jump in him. Embrace it. We’ll coach the mistakes. Go play like your head’s on fire.”

It's about time the Sharks let him get out there and do his thing.

Why did Sharks wait to give Michael Misa his NHL debut?

NHL teams are often a bit cautious with their young players just entering the league.

Misa is just 18, and the Sharks aren't expected to be immediate playoff contenders with a still very young roster.

They gave him a couple games to watch before getting him out there himself.

Misa is supposed to be the third-line center, between Ty Dellandrea and Philipp Kurashev, for his first game.

His most recent regular season action before this was for Saginaw in the OHL. He totaled 134 points, including 62 goals, in the 2024-25 OHL season.
