Why Seahawks' defense is perfect counter to Rams' NFL-best passing offense

The Seattle Seahawks are welcoming the Los Angeles Rams to Seattle for the NFC Championship game in what's shaping up to be a great matchup.

Their prior two meetings this season were close games, and now, this playoff game for a trip to the Super Bowl should be more of the same. But there is one matchup within the matchup that's more interesting than any other.

As ESPN's Seth Walder points out, the Matthew Stafford-led Rams offense is the NFL's best passing offense. But the Seahawks are the perfect counter to this offense, as Seattle's defense is also the best in the NFL against the Pass.

Seahawks are perfect counter to Rams' passing offense

"The Rams average 8.9 air yards per attempt, the highest mark in the league," Walder writes. "But the Seahawks' defense allows a meager 4.7 air yards per attempt to opponents, the lowest among all defenses."

Offensively, no team in the NFL gets more yards per passing attempt than the Rams. The Seahawks, on the other hand, have allowed the fewest yards per passing attempt this season.

The league's best passing offense and the league's best passing defense get to go up against one another in the NFC Championship game.

Part of why the Rams are so widely panned as a great team is their incredible offense led by Stafford, Puka Nacua, and Davante Adams.

If there were a defense to stop this potent passing attack, it would be the Seahawks unit. Devon Witherspoon, Josh Jobe, Riq Woolen, Nick Emmanwori, Coby Bryant, and Julian Love make up a strong secondary in Seattle.

They will limit the Rams' passing attack and give Sean McVay a challenge in finding downfield shots.

They will have underneath completions, but with the great tackling defense on the other side, the Seahawks would be forcing the Rams right where they want them.

Against an offense like the Rams, every stop will be massive. And the Seahawks, fortunately, have an incredible defense that's a near-perfect matchup against this potent passing attack.

As if this matchup couldn't get any better, the league's best offense and defense when it comes to air yards per attempt get to square up for a chance to go to the Super Bowl.
