The Indianapolis Colts lost to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 7, and it became clear that they were going to become trade deadline sellers this season.
At 2-5, the Colts are one of the more obvious sellers in the NFL, and that unfortunately includes a few beloved stars. And now, according to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer, the Colts are trading Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks.
Seeing Nelson go is a tough blow for the Colts' franchise, but taking a step back, this was actually the right decision for the Colts. But why? Well, the report from Pelissero includes one key detail that explains why this was a good trade: the compensation for Nelson.
Why Colts made the right decision with Quenton Nelson trade
"Trade! The Colts are sending eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seahawks for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick, sources tell @ringer @netflixsports," Pelissero reports.
This trade from the Colts might be a bitter pill to swallow for Colts fans, but this is actually a good move for the franchise. There is a reason why this move makes a ton of sense.
Seattle is giving up a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick. That's a pretty strong return for the Colts, even though it isn't a first- or a second-round pick.
Why is it such a good return for the Colts? If they didn't re-sign him this offseason, then the Colts would've, at best, gotten back a 2028 third-round pick at the end of the round, after pick 96.

So, instead of getting a non-guaranteed draft pick from Nelson's free-agent deal next offseason, they're guaranteeing they receive a third-rounder, likely higher than 96th overall, and an extra fifth-rounder on top of it.
Trading Nelson stings, especially as the heart and soul of this franchise for such a long time. But it's the right move, as the compensation for the trade was an obvious move for this Colts team to make before this year's trade deadline.
Colts fans have every right to be upset with how the season has gone, and the trade of Nelson in a vacuum. But for the betterment of this franchise going forward, this was absolutely the correct move.
