Why Red Sox meeting with Juan Soto could be good even if he signs elsewhere

2 hours ago 1

The Boston Red Sox have been hot and heavy in the Juan Soto sweepstakes, and just had their first meeting with him, that went very well. However, there’s always the chance the Sox don’t get him. According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

While the Sox might lose out on Soto to a New York team, if they do well and impress Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, his other clients might become interested in them as well.

An example of a client would be free agent Blake Snell, who the Sox are targeting as an ace for their rotation. Pete Alonso, another free agent, would also work as he is a righty slugger, which the Sox also need.

While Morosi isn’t sold on the Sox getting Soto, he thinks they have a better chance than Toronto, the final team involved in getting Soto. This is due to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Toronto’s best player, still not being locked up with a big contract.

Rafael Devers, the Sox’s current best player, was locked up back in 2023 for 10 years, $313.5 million. This gives Soto confidence that he can get that big contract, as the Red Sox have shown that they are willing to dole out money to players that are worthy.

Hopefully, Morosi is wrong and Soto lands in Boston. But at least nothing but good can come from these meetings.
