Why Nick Bosa has more to prove than any other 49ers player in 2026

The San Francisco 49ers are heading into the 2026 season with a lot of question marks al across the roster, most of which revolve around players coming off injury-riddled seasons.

George Kittle, in his return from an Achilles tear, is a big question mark, as is Fred Warner after his lengthy absence last season. But Nick Bosa's return from an ACL injury, the second one to his same knee, is the far bigger deal.

As The Athletic's Vic Tafur notes, Bosa has the most to prove of any player this upcoming season for the 49ers, as there are tens of millions at stake for Bosa in 2026 as he fights for a contract extension.

"Bosa, who turns 29 in October, is also going to need a new contract after this season, as the five-year deal he signed in 2023 has a $54.9 million salary-cap hit in 2027," Tafur writes. "If Bosa can show that he is still one of the best speed-to-power rushers in the NFL, the 49ers will be in for a successful season and Bosa in for another huge payday."

While other players on the roster really need to have strong 2026 seasons, like Mike Evans, Kittle, Ricky Pearsall, Mykel Williams, and many others, none compare to what's at stake for Bosa.

Bosa is likely to receive a new contract after the 2026 NFL season, as his current deal won't make sense for the 49ers to keep on their books.

Ideally, Bosa has a good 2026 season, and the 49ers feel confident in keeping him around on a new long-term contract that lowers his immediate cap-hit.

But, if Bosa struggles in 2026, whether it's due to his knee injuries lingering or simple regression as he ages, not only will his next contract be a big step down from his current deal, but the 49ers will be in a very tricky spot with his contract as well.

The former first-team All-Pro with 64.5 career sacks is one of the best edge rushers in the NFL. At least, that was the case coming into the 2025 NFL season.

While he's still a good player, there's a bit more uncertainty for 2026, thanks to his three-game 2025 season due to another ACL injury.

Bosa has a lot on the line in 2026, as a strong year could lead to Bosa earning a massive payday after the season comes to a close. Millions are on the line for Bosa, as he needs to prove he is still elite to earn such a major contract extension.
