The Navy Midshipmen are taking care of business on the football field.
That hasn't yet earned them respect in the AP Top 25 rankings. The Mids aren't ranked this week.
That's despite a 7-0 record that include 5-0 in conference play.
But head coach Brian Newberry isn't concerned.
"I could care less," Newberry said, via The Sporting News' Bill Bender, clearly intending to say that he couldn't care less.
There's good reason to not care all that much.
If Navy takes care of business and doesn't lose a game the rest of the season, it'll be in the College Football Playoff.
The AP Poll might matter, just a tad, if push comes to shove, but the CFP Rankings are different, anyway, so it really doesn't.
It'd be quite the feat for Navy to win out.
The Midshipmen have to take on high-flying North Texas this week, then Notre Dame the following week.
Then it's two more talented QBs and opponents with South Florida on Nov. 15 and Memphis on Nov. 27, not to mention a potential conference championship game before the Army-Navy game.
If Navy gets through that gauntlet, it both deserves to be ranked and deserves to be in the 12-team bracket.
The Midshipmen are led by the high-powered offensive trio of Blake Horvath, Eli Heidenreich and Alex Tecza. Together, they put together a great 2024 and are trying to top that in 2025.
If they find a way to keep winning, rankings still won't matter. They'll be in the dance, with a chance, and that's all they could possibly want at this point.
