Why 'Matt Jones' has 49ers' QB fans confused during NFL Week 6

2 hours ago 3

The San Francisco 49ers don't have their regular starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, in Week 6. He's still injured.

That leaves a question of who's up next on the QB depth chart. And some football fans are confused.

Google search trends on Sunday afternoon have everyone wondering who "Matt Jones" is.

And well, he's not the 49ers' quarterback, even if that's what his name kind of sounds like.

Who is Matt Jones?

Matt Jones is not the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback.

That's just a slightly misheard pronunciation of the guy actually playing QB for San Francisco, who is Mac Jones.

Yeah, that's Mac Jones the former first-round pick by the New England Patriots.

Mac's full name is Michael McCorkle Jones.

He spent last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars before joining the 49ers to back up Purdy this season. Purdy is out with a toe injury.

There is no Matt Jones involved here. It just sounds a heck of a lot like Mac Jones.

There was a Matt Jones once, a 2005 first-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

But the guy playing quarterback for the 49ers on Sunday is Mac Jones.

Just turn that volume up a bit, and hope Jim Nantz and Tony Romo enunciate a bit better.
