Prior to the Detroit Lions' Week 7 game against the Green Bay Packers, their first since their Week 6 bye, tight end Sam LaPorta made a comment calling out the Lions over his frustration at not receiving a contract extension.
While he was pressed about it later by reporters, and the Lions haven't gone on to make any notable comments about the contract situation, it's still an issue that's come up this week ahead of a big matchup.
But despite the negative buzz surrounding this contract issue, Jonathan Jones of The Athletic shared some positive news that LaPorta and the Lions are "more likely than not" going to find a way to stick together going forward.
Lions 'more likely than not' going to work out Sam LaPorta contract issue
"Things don't appear to be great between the Detroit Lions and tight end Sam LaPorta, but it is more likely than not that the two sides eventually reach an agreement on an extension before free agency," Jones reports.
This is some great news for the Lions and their fans, as ensuring LaPorta doesn't go anywhere would be huge for this team.
Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams are a great wide receiver duo, and with Jahmyr Gibbs at running back and LaPorta at tight end, Jared Goff and the Lions can do some real damage offensively going forward.
Losing LaPorta would sting, which is why a contract extension is so important for the Lions. LaPorta wants to be in Detroit as well, so this situation working out does make sense.

But the comments made by LaPorta sparked concern. Fortunately, this update from Jones reveals that the odds of LaPorta coming back are still good.
As one NFL source told Jones, "Brad Holmes does not like losing his draft picks, especially his high ones."
With both parties interested in a contract extension, it would stand to reason that something does get worked out before he hits the open market.
While LaPorta wants his extension sooner rather than later, Jones' report indicates that, at the very least, he's likely to stay in Detroit, even if an extension comes during the offseason and not mid-season.
LaPorta's comments sparked some concern about his future in Detroit, but with Jones' report, it seems that, "more likely than not," the Lions and their star tight end will work something out at some point in the future.
