Tom Brady officially became a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders last season.
At first, it was unclear how visible Brady would be, and it was assumed the legendary quarterback would simply be in the background. However, with the Raiders hosting the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football in Week 2, Brady was shown to be in the coach's booth with a headset on.
It was a jarring shot considering it was the first time we've actually seen Brady take a hands-on approach. Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly did recently reveal that he meets with Brady multiple times a week to go over film and go through the game plan, so it appears like Brady is getting more involved.
Brady's purchase of minority stake in the Raiders was first reported in spring 2023, but the deal wasn't approved by the NFL until last October. Brady and his partners have a combined 10% stake in the team, while Mark Davis remains the controlling owner with 30.5% interest.
Of course, it's obvious to see how Brady being in the booth could be problematic. If you didn't know, Brady is also a broadcaster for Fox who calls a game every single week. This means Brady gets to meet with opposing teams and gather as much intel as possible to be able to call the games effectively.
For example, last week, Brady called a Washington Commanders game. Brady met with the Commanders and gained valuable behind-the-scenes information ahead of that game. The Raiders are slated to play against the Commanders in Week 3, so will Brady be in the coach's box for that game too? At the very least, it's a bad look.
It also came out last year that Brady was cleared to even call Raiders games for Fox. How would that work? Would Brady call the game for Fox, or would he rather be in the coach's booth?
This seems like a situation that will have to be resolved sooner than later. Will Brady eventually spend all of his time with the Raiders, or will he continue calling games for Fox?
On the field, the Raiders found themselves in a 17-6 hole at halftime against the Chargers. The year began on a high note in Week 1 as the Raiders traveled to Foxboro and upset the New England Patriots.
If Brady's Raiders take down the Chargers, they'll be in sole possession of first place in the AFC West in Pete Carroll's first season at the helm. As mentioned above, the Raiders will take on the Commanders in Week 3 before taking on the Chicago Bears in Week 4.
