The Kentucky Derby is full of tradition. It is commonly billed as "the most exciting two minutes in sports", but the Kentucky Derby has always been more than just the race. The over-the-top outfits and floppy hats filling the stands just add to the pomp and circumstance from the race.
While many sporting events start with the national anthem, others have an iconic moment that signals the start of the event is near. For NASCAR races it is "start your engines", and for the Kentucky Derby it is "Riders Up." This message instructs jockeys to mount their horses and head to the racetrack.
Similar to NASCAR, there is an honored guest of the event who is tasked with making the announcement. Here is who will be saying "Riders Up" at the 2025 Kentucky Derby.

Why is Simone Biles at the Kentucky Derby?
Biles will be the honoree who will announce "Riders Up" right before the start of the 2025 Kentucky Derby. LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne will call 'Riders Up' at the Kentucky Oaks, which precedes the Kentucky Derby and is only for three-year-old follies.
The post time for the 2025 Kentucky Derby is 6:57 p.m ET. With 'Riders Up' typically being called about 19 minutes prior, we can expect to see Biles make the announcement around 6:38 p.m. ET.

What is 'Riders Up'?
This command historically came from the Paddock Judge. In 2012, though, the decision was made to involve a celebrity or dignitary and give them the special honor of saying the phrase. Once hearing the phrase, jockeys mount their horses and then go down the Paddock Runway, which leads to the track.
