Everyone agrees almost-All-Star-MVP Pete Alonso’s free agency will go better the second time around. But my question is this:
Why is he worth so much less than Rafael Devers?
Alonso has an .859 OPS to Devers’ .855 (and Alonso’s OPS plus is better, 137-128). The Giants took on the $255 million on the Devers deal (and gave up four players). Alonso is two years older, but unlike Devers, he plays 1B enthusiastically.
There seems to be a bias against 1B — maybe it’s better to refuse to play there?
