First baseman Pete Alonso enjoyed a strong 2025 season, finishing with a .272 batting average, 38 home runs and 126 RBIs. The 30-year-old also earned his fifth All-Star selection and first ever Silver Slugger award.
As a result, Alonso has decided to opt out of the remainder of his contract, becoming a free agent in the hope of securing an improved offer. Ever since the Mets' season came to an end, Alonso's future has been quite a hot topic, and reports have linked the infielder with several franchises.
On Thursday, Pete Alonso's agent, Scott Boras, was quizzed about his client's chances of eventually adapting to a DH role if he re-signed with the Mets.

Responding, Boras spoke about how Alonso was determined to do whatever gave his team the best chance of winning at this point in his career, before things took a slightly more eccentric turn.
"I think Pete at this point in his career, he's about winning, no doubt. Had that question a lot. There's no doubt that Pete's pursuers are prime to pay the power piper. Pete picked a perfect period to play preeminently at really a primary position. A playoff-parched plethora will pounce to participate in the polar plunge." Boras saidReacting to the 73-year-old's comments, plenty of fans left comments poking fun at Boras' alliterative approach to answering the question.

Scott Boras explains why Pete Alonso is the "ideal franchise player" for the New York Mets
In the same interaction with the press, Scott Boras also explained why Pete Alonso can be considered the "ideal franchise player" for the New York Mets.
"Pete has been a lifetime Met. The one thing I think Pete understands, that playing in New York is not something most can do. To become a star-level player in New York, even fewer can do it. And so I think the New York fans recognize it, and they're been very outward and appreciative of him." "He's an ideal franchise player, plays every day, and it's clear that the New York fans relate to somebody who is workman-like. Who is what Pete is. He is the elephant that goes out there every day; he is impenetrable. And he really knows how to manage the pressure of that situation. So I think it's something he's very proud of, because of the fact that so few have achieved that standing." Boras said
