Why fans think Jayson Tatum took shot at Jaylen Brown with 'smartest person in the room' speech to campers

For the first time this fall, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown will take an NBA court as opponents.

After nine playoff trips together, including two Finals appearances and one championship, the Boston Celtics split their star duo this offseason, opting to send Brown to the rival Philadelphia 76ers, where he's now set to play alongside LeBron James. Brown's Boston exit came with plenty of drama, however, including reports and subtle suggestions that he and Tatum couldn't co-exist. 

Now, with Brown gone, fans interpreted some interesting motivational comments from Tatum to campers at an offseason event on Saturday as a dig at his former teammate. 

Here's what Tatum said and why fans think it's a shot at Brown.

Jayson Tatum message to campers 

On Saturday, clips of Tatum were posted to social media as he talked to kids at a camp about leadership.

"Being around somebody that feels like they know it all, I don’t wanna be around that person," Tatum said. "I don’t wanna be the smartest person in the room, I want to learn from somebody else."

On the surface, they appeared to be some wise thoughts for the younger generation — but NBA fans thought Tatum was subtly taking a shot at his ex-co-star after a report earlier in the offseason claimed Brown thinks he is "the smartest guy in every room."

The 2026 offseason has been a drama-filled one for Brown. He's been the subject of trade rumors in the past — but things reached new heights this year between the Celtics' tough first-round elimination, Giannis Antetokounmpo being available and Boston's dynamic of Brown having a career year in Tatum's injury absence, then saying it was the favorite season of his career.

Partially due to those reasons, Brown went from a key trade chip in Antetokounmpo talks, to being shopped by the Celtics in efforts to get off his contract despite being a former Finals MVP.  And the damage to Brown's apparent trade value didn't end there.

While some reports indicated that teams' analytics didn't view him as a star at all, others were focused on his personality off the court. In July, just as Brown was being traded to Philadelphia, Colin Cowherd said NBA sources told him Brown has a "disease" where he "thinks he's the smartest guy in every room."

Brown, who has been appearing on his Twitch livestreams often this offseason, responded to those "smartest guy in every room" comments the day after.

“No offense to everybody in sports, but the bar is f—ing low,” Brown said. "We gotta stop with the anonymous sources. ...  I'm tired of these damn anonymous sources, like anonymous executive, anonymous source, Colin Cowherd, Bobby Marks, Stephen A. Smith. Anonymous sources is saying anything. I think y'all are the sources."

So, when Tatum directly mentioned he doesn't want to be the "smartest person in the room" to campers, Brown's previous comments certainly rang a bell for NBA fans.
