The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 in the 2026 NBA Finals Game 1 on Wednesday night to extend their playoff winning streak to 12 games, with Jalen Brunson scoring 30 points.
But in the middle of the game, a court rusher became what everyone was talking about. He risked almost everything to have a memorable moment with Spurs centre Victor Wembanyama, who finished the game with 26 points and 12 rebounds.
With 6:28 left in the fourth quarter and the Knicks leading 92-86, the fan ran onto the court mid-play with his phone in hand. He rushed directly towards Wembanyama, trying to capture a selfie with the Spurs superstar before two security guards swiftly removed him from the floor.
Broadcast cameras caught the whole thing from above and it briefly looked like the fan had actually pulled it off. But he hadn't. Not even close.
Shortly after, BrickCenter shared the fan's POV footage, revealing what actually happened. The fan could be seen pulling his phone out of his pocket and trying to record everything, but Wemby was too tall for the frame. Because the Spurs center stands at 7'4", the chaotic clip only captured his torso before security swept the fan off the hardwood.
— BrickCenter (@BrickCenter_) June 4, 2026Many on social media felt his pain, with one writing, "Bro ran on court for the selfie of a lifetime and all he got was Wemby's kneecaps and a lifetime ban. Absolute cinema.”
"His ban and fine went to waste," added another.
A third viewer noted, "Bro should've used the ticket money to get a better phone. And only got like 2/3 of Wemby."
A random X user penned, “All that effort and he still didn't even get their faces in there lmaoo."
Wembanyama admitted after the game that he was caught completely off guard. "I've never been in that situation. I didn't know how to act," the 22-year-old said, comparing the surprise to the time a bat flew across the court in San Antonio in 2024 when Spurs mascot Coyote stormed to catch it.
The league is widely expected to issue a lifetime arena ban to the fan, as NBA rarely shows leniency to anyone interrupting the fourth quarter of a Finals game. A fine from the league is also very much on the table. He risked it all for a blurry chest shot. The footage doesn't lie.
