England silenced the Estadio Azteca crowd for a brief moment after Jude Bellingham scored two goals in 98 seconds, but the English started playing with fire immediately after.

Mexico got a goal back before the end of the first half and nearly scored an equalizer, entering the second half with momentum. The momentum continued to shift away from England when Jarell Quansah was shown a red card and sent off after a slide tackle that riled up the Mexican bench.

While England got its goal back on a penalty kick by Harry Kane, the team was knocked down to 10 players for the bulk of the second half.

Play continued for a minute or so after the incident, but Mexico's bench furiously attempted to get the attention of the officials and ultimately got their wish. The VAR review of the play was brief, and Quansah was shown a red card.

Quansah appeared to make contact with the ball before he made contact with Gallardo's legs, but officials evidently didn't believe he was simply attempting to make a play on the ball. The play turned into an illegal tackle of Gallardo, and Mexico instantly reacted as though Quansah's slide went beyond a play on the ball.

Quansah became the first England player to be shown a red card at the World Cup since Wayne Rooney in 2006.
