Why delayed goal kick gave a corner to Brazil vs. Haiti with new rule

1 hour ago 3

The World Cup's new goal kick and corner kick rule came into the spotlight early in Friday night's matchup between Brazil and Haiti.

A delayed goal kick can result in a corner, and that's what happened.

Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide was taking his time to put the ball back into play.

The referee decided it had been too long, and so Brazil got a corner.

Haiti cleared the ensuing set piece, so it didn't cost them, but it was notable.

Why did Brazil get a corner from delayed Haiti goal kick?

The newest Laws of the Game pertain to goal kicks that are deliberately delayed.

If the referee deems that to be happening, the ref can start a five-second count.

If it reaches the end of that countdown, a corner kick is given.

Refs can be deliberate about this, but on Friday night, the referee didn't want to let Haiti do too much time wasting too early.

That's why the corner was given despite it being a goal kick.
