The Dallas Cowboys have made their first significant move of the 2026 offseason.
The Cowboys announced on Friday they have released linebacker Logan Wilson, who was acquired via trade with the Cincinnati Bengals before last year's trade deadline.
Wilson appeared in seven games for the Cowboys after being acquired in the trade and tallied 24 tackles, one pass defensed and forced one fumble.
In 15 total games with the Cowboys and Bengals, Wilson tallied 70 tackles, five passes defensed and one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Why Cowboys released Logan Wilson
The biggest reason is the money the Cowboys will save.
According to Over The Cap, cutting Wilson saves $6.5 million in cap space, which is a step toward Dallas getting itself under the salary cap ahead of free agency next month.
Another reason is Wilson didn't do much in his seven games in Dallas and was only playing about 50% of the snaps. Considering how bad the Cowboys' defense was, that's pretty telling in regard to how Dallas viewed his play.
Wilson was a sure tackler for the most part, but he simply didn't offer much as a run defender, in coverage, or in the pass-rush. These are all things we knew about Wilson while he was in Cincinnati.
If the Cowboys are going to successfully revamp their defense, they need better than that.
