Why Chelsea are tearing up their transfer playbook to sign Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson

It will be 16 years in November since Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck were young stars involved in a stunning 3-0 win for Sunderland over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Welbeck, on loan from Manchester United, completed the scoring, while Henderson was in his final season with his boyhood club before a career-defining move to Liverpool the following summer.

None of the fans in attendance that day would have imagined that Welbeck and Henderson, now 35 and 36 respectively, would arrive as veterans in west London to herald the start of a new era.

But that's the reality, with new manager Xabi Alonso set to make the veteran England internationals his second and third Chelsea signings.

Why Chelsea are signing Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson

This comes down to one word: experience.

Ever since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital's BlueCo consortium took charge of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022, the club have prioritised buying young talent with a high resale value.

This has led to some notable transfer-market successes. Cole Palmer's £42.5 million ($52.8 million) move from Manchester City in 2023 raised eyebrows, but the 24-year-old's market value is considerably higher than this after establishing himself as one of the leading players in the Premier League, even allowing for a mixed campaign last time around.

Even Chelsea's transfer market misses, of which there have been plenty under BlueCo, can generally be moved on for a tidy fee. Alejandro Garnacho's departure to Aston Villa stands as the latest example.

But while this might look good on the books, a persistent problem for Chelsea on the field has been a lack of leadership from senior professionals.

Alonso's initial move to sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland can now be viewed as an attempt to remedy this. However, Xhaka enjoyed a brilliant season on his return to the Premier League, to a far greater extent than Henderson did at Brentford, even allowing for the latter's England World Cup call-up.

Welbeck will join Chelsea after the most prolific Premier League season of his career at Brighton and Hove Albion, with 13 goals. He has 25 goals in 76 appearances since Fabian Hurzeler took over at Albion two years ago. Alonso will want to harness the late-career purple patch, but the reasons for signing Welbeck and Henderson go far beyond their capabilities as veteran football players. 

They are likely to be key when it comes to setting the culture of a Stamford Bridge dressing room that has seemed to lack direction and purpose for some years.

How much are Chelsea paying for Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson?

In contrast to the club-record outlay of £117m ($155m) to bring in Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa as Alonso's first signing, the transfer spend on Henderson and Welbeck will be minimal.

Henderson has reached an agreement with Brentford to cancel his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium. He is reportedly set to agree a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea and Brighton are understood to have agreed an undisclosed fee for Welbeck, which is unlikely to be a substantial amount.

Where will Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson play under Xabi Alonso?

Welbeck is likely to play as a centre-forward, especially given his excellent recent form there for Brighton. He played as a wide attacker sporadically at Manchester United and Arsenal but has been a specialist centre-forward over recent years.

Joao Pedro was Chelsea's first-choice striker last season, meaning Welbeck is most likely to be a rotation option. However, the Brazil international is also comfortable playing as a No. 10 and played alongside Welbeck at Brighton, having also briefly been his team-mate at Watford.

Welbeck's arrival casts some doubt on the future of Liam Delap, who struggled for form and fitness after joining Chelsea from Ipswich Town last summer. Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson could also move on in this transfer window.

Henderson feels even less likely to be a first-choice central midfielder, given the presence of Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and the injury-ravaged Romeo Lavia. Club captain Reece James has also split his time between right-back and midfield recently, doing similar for England at the 2026 World Cup.

Andrey Santos' departure to Manchester United creates a squad place for Henderson, but Chelsea's strength in this area underlines the sense that the former Liverpool captain is being brought in to be a dressing-room figurehead.

Across spells with boyhood club Manchester United, a loan stint at Sunderland, Arsenal, Watford and Brighton, Welbeck has made 400 Premier League appearances, scoring 90 goals.

He won the Premier League title with Manchester United in 2012/13.

Jordan Henderson Premier League career, stats

Henderson has made 463 Premier League appearances, with the bulk of those coming at Liverpool, who he joined from Sunderland in 2011.

He and Welbeck played together for the Black Cats during the latter's loan spell in the 2010/11 season.

Henderson was Liverpool's captain when they ended their 30-year wait for a 19th Premier League title in 2019/20. He also won the FA Cup, two EFL Cups, and the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and old Club World Cup in 2019.
