Why Braves signed ex-Tigers, Guardians .670 OPS veteran catcher

The Atlanta Braves have added a veteran catcher with nine years of MLB experience to the organization. 

The 33-year-old spent time with the San Francisco Giants earlier this season, hitting .162 with four home runs and nine RBIs in 29 games. 

According to the MLB.com transaction log, Eric Haase has signed a minor league deal with the Braves. 

Haase was assigned to Atlanta's Florida Complex. Evidently, he signed the contract before the September 1 cutoff date, an indication that he will be eligible for the postseason. 

The Braves hope Haase's services are not needed, and they can enter the postseason with Drake Baldwin as their starter and Sean Murphy as the backup.

Haase was released by the Giants after the All-Star break and spent a few weeks with the Chicago White Sox on a minor league deal, so the Braves are his third organization of the year. 

He's not a strong defender behind the plate but has displayed pop in his bat. However, his best power days are behind him. 

In 2021, Haase hit a career-high 22 homers with the Detroit Tigers.
