Who owns Flying Mohawk? Meet Jayson Werth's horse in the 2025 Kentucky Derby

When the Kentucky Derby kicks off on Saturday, 20 horses will race for the chance at history to start Triple Crown season.

One of those horses is Flying Mohawk, who enters the race as an underdog to take home the crown. While Flying Mohawk is not a well-known horse in its own right, the horse has one of the more famous owners in this Derby and an ownership group that had success during last year's Triple Crown races.

Flying Mohawk will open the race from gate No. 11 as its ownership group is looking for a second straight Triple Crown win. Here's a breakdown of Flying Mohawk's owner and all the success he had last year.

Who owns Flying Mohawk?

Former Phillies and Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth owns Flying Mohawk, who will be one of the 20 horses running in the 151st Kentucky Derby. Flying Mohawk will enter the race as a longshot to win, but Werth explained that's exactly how he wants it.

"You don’t want to be the favorite at the Kentucky Derby, and we definitely will not be the favorite, so let's go," Werth said on MLB Network last month.

After Werth retired from baseball, he took up horse racing as a way to help fill the void he had without the sport by starting "Two Eight Racing" stable. This will be the second straight year that Werth has a horse in the Derby, as he owned Dornoch during last year's race. In 2024, Werth described why he gets so excited about the first Triple Crown race.

"It has some fragrance of the World Series," he said before last year's race. "Things are totally different now. We're at the barns, roads are blocked off, there's security everywhere. It's definitely heightened, and you get the sense, 'This is it, this is the highest level of the sport.'"

Jayson Werth Belmont Stakes win 2024

Last year, Werth's horse Dornoch won the Belmont Stakes with 17-1 odds, marking the former outfielder's first Triple Crown win in his horse-racing career.

"Horse racing is the most underrated sport in the world, bar none... This is as good as it gets in horse racing; this is as good as it gets in sports."

Dornoch ran two of the three Triple Crown races in 2024, finishing in fourth place in the Kentucky Derby and skipping the Preakness Stakes before winning the Belmont Stakes. Last year was the first time that Werth had a horse compete in a Triple Crown race, and he came away with a winner in the end.

Werth explained that winning the Belmont Stakes felt just as good as winning the World Series with the Phillies in 2008.

"I would put it right up there with winning at the biggest stage," he said, "Horse racing is the most underrated sport in the world, bar none. It's the biggest game, you've got the Derby, the Preakness, the Belmont. We just won the Belmont. This is as good as it gets in horse racing; this is as good as it gets in sports."
