This World Cup was bigger than ever with 48 teams, but only one can actually lift the trophy on July 19.

After 48 turned to 32, 32 quickly turned to 16, and 16 is quickly turning to eight as the world sets its sights on the quarterfinals.

Many of the world's most prominent squads are still alive with hope of bringing the trophy back home, including some recent champions.

Here's a look at the updated World Cup bracket and the teams still remaining in the tournament.

How many teams are left in the World Cup?

Nine teams remain in the World Cup.

16 teams entered Saturday still alive. Canada and Paraguay faced elimination on the opening day of Round of 16 play, followed by Brazil and Mexico on Sunday. On Monday, Portugal bowed out with a loss to Spain and the United States was slapped out of the tournament by Belgium. Tuesday saw Argentina advance via a comeback win over Egypt. The last team to punch its ticket to the quarterfinals was Switzerland, who beat Colombia in a penalties.  

Seven teams are off to the quarterfinals, while one more still have to play to determine their fate. Here's a look at who's advancing.

Morocco

Morocco defeated Netherlands on penalties in the Round of 32 before eliminating Canada with a 3-0 victory in the Round of 16. The first African nation to reach back-to-back quarterfinals, Morocco is looking for revenge against France after the French eliminated the nation in the 2022 semifinals.

France

France rolled past Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32 before winning a grueling 1-0 battle against Paraguay on a 70th minute penalty kick by Kylian Mbappe. It's France's fourth consecutive quarterfinals appearance, and a win over Morocco would give France its third consecutive trip to the semifinals.

Norway

Norway is quarterfinal-bound for the first time ever, after an upset of Brazil in the Round of 16. Led by Erling Haaland, Norway knocked out Ivory Coast in a closely contested Round of 32 battle before Haaland's two late goals were the difference against Brazil. Norway is set to face England in the quarterfinals.

England

England is making its third consecutive quarterfinal appearance and is seeking its second semifinal appearance in the last three World Cups after narrow wins over DR Congo and Mexico. England will meet Erling Haaland and Norway in Miami.

Spain

Spain is yet to allow a goal in the tournament and will be a tough out going forward. The Spaniards advanced to the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over Portugal, sending Cristiano Ronaldo to the World Cup retirement home in the process.

Belgium

Belgium emphatically dismissed the United States 4-1 after a weekend of controversy, and are warming up to their expected form at the right time after a underwhelming group stage.

Argentina

Argentina stayed alive by virtue of a furious comeback victory over Egypt. Lionel Messi scored one of the most important goals of his illustrious World Cup career to equalize a game his team once trailed 2-0 late in the second half.

Switzerland

The Swiss won a peanalty shootout over Colombia to advance to the quarterfinals. The enter the round as a heavy underdog and will meet Argentina in thier next game.
