Who is Norway's goalie? Meet Orjan Nyland, a World Cup hero vs. Brazil

20 hours ago 3

Before Ørjan Nyland saved a penalty kick against Brazil in the Round of 16 in the World Cup, he could likely be considered mostly anonymous.

But from that point on, the Norway goalie was trying to write himself a hero's narrative.

No matter what happens, from that point on, including multiple big saves as the match went on -- Nyland provided an unforgettable sporting moment for the Norwegians.

His name is one worth knowing, even if very few knew it before.

Who is Norway's goalie?

Orjan Nyland is a 35-year old keeper who was born in Volda in Norway.

He stands 6-foot-4 and is a well-experienced player at international level. Sunday's Round of 16 match was his 75th as Norway's goalie at senior level.

It's also by far the biggest game he's ever played.

Nyland is a less-experienced club keeper who has spent much of his career as a backup.

What club does Orjan Nyland play for?

He is a member of Sevilla in La Liga, the top division in Spain.

Since 2023, though, he has just 59 total appearances -- rarely a full-time starter.

Nyland has also played for Hodd in Norway, Molde in Norway, Ingolstadt in Germany, Aston Villa and Norwich City and Bournemouth in Reading, RB Leipzig in Germany and now Sevilla.

He has worked hard to maintain relevance to the national team in time for this historic knockout run, and now he's trying to make a name for himself.
