Spoilers ahead for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 1!

The season premiere of Daredevil: Born Again (“The Northern Star”) delivered a slew of memorable moments. We were gifted with a number of the show’s signature fight scenes, we got some surprisingly tender moments between Matt (Charlie Cox) and Karen (Deborah Ann Woll), and don’t get us started on that surprising ending, with Daredevil receiving an unlikely assist from an old nemesis. But my favorite part of “The Northern Star” was the debut of the charismatic CIA fixer Mr. Charles.

Portrayed with aplomb by fan favorite Matthew Lillard, Mr. Charles jumped off the screen as he playfully antagonized, well, everyone around him. Injecting Daredevil with some welcomed humor and levity, Mr. Charles has sparked the interest of the fandom.

Who exactly is Mr. Charles? Is he connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Here’s everything you need to know.

Who Plays Mr. Charles on Daredevil: Born Again Season 2?

As we mentioned above, Mr. Charles is portrayed by the great Matthew Lillard.

Best known for his portrayal of Stu Macher in the original Scream, Lillard has appeared in countless movies and TV shows over his expansive 35 year career, including The Descendants, Scooby-Doo, She’s All That, Prime Video’s Cross and Bosch, Without a Paddle, NBC’s Good Girls, FX’s The Bridge, and so much more.

Who Is Daredevil’s Mr. Charles?

During a February interview with the LA Times, Lillard described his character as a “CIA spook.”

“He’s a guy that controls power from afar,” Lillard explained. “He helps nations rise and fall, but he’s very clandestine. He is not impressed by the powers of [Vincent] D’Onofrio’s character [Kingpin] at all. He and I get into this really delicious struggle over power. It’s good. It’s fun.”

From the season premiere, we know Mr. Charles is a loquacious man who seemingly has a penchant for gyros. He also appeared to have offended Vanessa, which, you know… isn’t a great move, historically speaking!

For now, Mr. Charles and Mayor Fisk appear to be, reluctantly, on the same page, but their relationship is fraught, with Mr. Charles being described as an antagonist for Fisk.

Is Mr. Charles Connected To The MCU?

It appears so! During the phone call in Fisk’s office, we learn that Charles works with Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine — who’s played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Thunderbolts*the current government liaison to The New Avengers.

The first episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is now streaming on Disney+. New episodes debut Tuesday nights at 9:00 p.m. ET on the streamer.
