On Sunday, the Round of 32 will finally begin at this year's World Cup. While many teams that were expected to make the knockout stages are present, there are some surprises in this summer's field.
First-time World Cup participant Cape Verde was able to finish second in a Group H that included trophy threat Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia. South Africa, playing in just their second World Cup ever and first since they hosted in 2010, has also qualified and will match up against co-host Canada.
The powerhouse trio of Argentina, France, and Brazil also qualified for the next round with little to no trouble. This year's World Cup marks the first time in tournament history with 32 teams in the first knockout round, so there is increased room for more drama and upsets.

Who is in the Round of 32 in 2026 World Cup?
All 32 knockout-stage bids are locked up. Here is a look at each team that secured a bid to the Round of 32:
France
- Les Bleus look to be on a collision course to yet another deep run in the World Cup after winning Group I easily.
- Didier Deschamps' side has been playing brilliant soccer for the vast majority of the tournament, and they were tied as one of the highest-scoring teams in the group stage (10 goals). They will play Sweden in the Round of 32.

Spain
- The 2024 EURO champions' World Cup campaign started on a rocky path with a shocking 0-0 draw to Cape Verde; however, La Roja won their next two group-stage matches en route to a No. 1 finish in Group H.
