The 2026 World Cup has only been further proof of Haaland's stardom, as he's led Norway on a deep run in its return to the tournament, lasting qualifying in 1998. But while Haaland may be the biggest star in his family, he's not the only soccer player.

Who is Erling Haaland's dad?

Erling Haaland's dad is Alf-Inge "Alfie" Haaland. The now-53-year-old, born in Stravanger, Norway, is a former soccer player himself, spending a multi-decade career playing for various teams in England.

Alfie Haaland's ex-wife and Erling's mother, Gry Marita Braut, is also an accomplished Norwegian heptathlon athlete; including Erling, the couple had three children. Alfie Haaland later re-married and had two more daughters.

Like Erling once would, Alfie spent time with Manchester City and the Norwegian national soccer team in his career.

Alfie Haaland playing career

Alfie Haaland, a right-back/midfielder, played for multiple teams in England from 1989 to 2013.

He first joined the youth team of his hometown club, Bryne, in 1979. Shortly afterward, he made his first-team debut at age 17, signing his first pro contract.

In 1993, Haaland joined First Division club Nottingham Forest, with whom he played for four years before heading to Leeds United. Mostly being used as a utility player, Haaland scored eight goals for Leeds United from 1997-2000.

In 2000, Haaland joined Manchester City — and the next year, he was on the wrong end of some controversy. In an April 2001 match, Roy Keane tackled Haaland and kicked him high on his right knee, resulting in his exit from the game. Keane was fined for the tackle and given a three-match ban — and a year later in his autobiography, Keane admitted the tackle was deliberate as retaliation for previous on-field criticism. Then, Keane was given another fine and five-match ban, while Haaland later underwent surgery on his knee.

Ultimately, the knee issues led to Haaland's initial retirement in July 2003. Later on, he would come out of retirement to play for a hometown-based club, Rosseland, in the Norwegian Third Division in 2011, then he retired for good in 2013.
