ESPN is reporting Monday morning that Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will be out a minimum of three months due to a toe injury.
Adam Schefter reports that the Bengals' QB will require surgery, and the earliest he may return is December 15, meaning he will likely be out for the remainder of the season, as the NFL playoffs would begin a few weeks later.
Who is the Bengals' backup?
Burrow’s backup is Jake Browning, who led the team to victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Behind him is Brett Rypien.
This is not new for the Bengals. Burrow has been injury-prone since joining the NFL. Ironic that he was mostly healthy last year, and the Bengals still didn’t make the playoffs because of their defense.
Although Browning got the job done against the Jaguars, Shefter is reporting that the team is in the market for another quarterback. Browning threw for 241 yards and two touchdowns.
“The Bengals have been calling around to other free-agent quarterbacks since after Joe Burrow’s injury, knowing they will have to add at least one more to their roster.”
The question is, what quarterbacks are available right now? Most of the big-name free agent quarterbacks like Mac Jones, Jameis Winston, and others are with new teams.
The Bengals are going to have the same situation with Browning if they don’t shape up their offensive line. When Burrow is healthy, which is rare these days, he is part of one of he best offenses in the league.
But the Bengals continue to literally shoot themselves in the foot by not drafting an offensive lineman to protect Burrow. There were several available in the first round of the draft this past year, but the team decided to draft defensive end Shemar Stewart out of Texas A&M, which they needed. But not addressing your offensive line in the first round has once again come to haunt this team.
