The Chicago White Sox had a disastrous 2024 season, going 41-121 and breaking the all-time single-season loss record previously set by the 1962 New York Mets.
The immediate future doesn't look good for the South Siders, which means 2025 will likely be yet another lost season. However, there are things they can do to expedite their rebuild process.
One of them is trading left-hander Garrett Crochet, who was an All-Star this season. His value is high, so they would be wise to trade him now.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report listed Crochet as one of the top trade chips this offseason.
"Not exactly breaking any news here. Garrett Crochet has been maybe the single biggest name popping up in trade conjecture since somewhere in early-to-mid May vicinity," Miller wrote.
"The latest rumblings suggest it's more likely than not that Crochet will be celebrating New Year's Day as a member of a franchise that isn't hopelessly moribund."
There are a lot of teams that could use Crochet. During the regular season, he logged 146 innings and posted a 3.58 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and a 4.1 bWAR while averaging 12.9 strikeouts per nine innings.
Needless to say, the cost is going to be high for Crochet. The White Sox will want players that can help them right away so that they can speed up their rebuild process. The best way to do that is to trade Crochet now while his value is high.
He also still has two years of arbitration eligibility remaining, which means he won't be too expensive to pay over the next few seasons. But the White Sox would be wise to capitalize on his value while they can.
We'll see what kind of trade interest Crochet generates.
