White Sox sign former Blue Jays, Red Sox catcher after Brewers release

The Chicago White Sox are making an addition at catcher with just a few days until Opening Day. 

According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, the AL Central club has signed veteran Reese McGuire to a one-year, $1.2 million contract. McGuire's release from the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday presents him with a new opportunity. 

This will be the 31-year-old's second stint with the White Sox, as he played 53 games with the organization in 2022.

Kyle Teel's Grade 2 hamstring strain has McGuire, who has also spent time with the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs, in line for the backup catching job behind Edgar Quero. 

McGuire can 'support' Quero 

“When you look at Quero kind of moving into that top spot and how to best complement him, with Quero really doing most of his damage at the plate from the right side,” White Sox manager Will Venable told MLB.com's Scott Merkin.

"To be able to get a left-handed hitting catcher to support him and complement him well, we thought it was really important for us to get off to a good start.”

McGuire owns a career .248/.293/374 slash line with 25 home runs and a .667, so it cannot be expected that he will replace Teel's offensive production while the youngster is out. 

But this is a solid addition that helps Venable and the White Sox start the season with an experienced backup.
