White Sox linked to blazing fast prep shortstop hitting over .500 this spring

The Chicago White Sox are doing something very few people expected them to do, and that is to be leading the AL Central division 78 games into the season.

They have been one of multiple themes that have shattered expectations, making for a fun time for the fanbase. But while the fanbase is enjoying this ride, the front office is getting more serious about the future.

The South Siders were awarded the No. 1 pick later this summer, something they haven't had since 1977 when they drafted Harold Baines out of high school.

There are a ton of options for the White Sox to choose from here. Now, for much of the season, they were linked to UCLA's Roch Cholowsky, but recent mocks have shied away from that angle.

Instead, Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter predicts that the White Sox will take Texas prep shortstop Grady Emerson first overall.

"Emerson is one of only two high schoolers ever to be named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation's top amateur player, joining Bobby Witt Jr. in 2019. He hit .532/.648/.1.013 with seven home runs, 50 RBI and 31 steals during the regular season this spring."

Emerson doesn't have many flaws with his game, and playing his high school ball in Texas, it's not like he didn't face stiff competition.

His left-handed swing plays to all sides of the field with some pretty impressive exit velocities, finishing second in last year's High School Home Run Derby. He's also a threat on the basepaths.

Defensively, he has a strong arm with quick hands and a high baseball IQ. Most scouts believe he will stick at shortstop easily and has the potential to be a future star in the big leagues.
