Why 'The White Lotus'' Jason Isaacs Says Set Was an "Open Prison Camp"
Jason Isaacs wasn’t making smoothies for the money.
Four months after The White Lotus’ third season premiered, the 62-year-old—who played Timothy Ratliffe, the family patriarch—revealed that every cast member on the show was paid “a very low price” per episode: $40,000.
“Generally actors don’t talk about pay in public because it’s ridiculously disproportionate to what we do—putting on makeup and funny voices—and just upsets the public,” Jason told Variety in an interview published June 16. “But compared to what people normally get paid for big television shows, that’s a very low price.”
In addition to having made around $320,000 for the entire season, Jason made the same amount as cast members with less experience, including Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sam Nivola and Sarah Catherine Hook, who portrayed his on-screen children.
But according to the Harry Potter alum, that didn’t bother him at all.
“I never work for money,” he explained. “I’ve done all right. People will think I have huge stockpiles of money but sadly, what I’ve done rather immaturely is expand my outgoings to match my incomings and pretty much spent everything I’ve earned over the years.”
And even though the show wasn’t necessarily filling their pockets, the Peter Pan actor insisted that each of his costars wouldn’t trade the experience for the world.
“The fact is, we would have paid to be in it,” he quipped. “We probably would have given a body part.”
E! News has reached out to HBO for comment but has not heard back.
As for what made their experience on set so special? Well, filming at a luxury resort in Thailand was definitely a perk—but it also came with a few caveats.
“It was a theatre camp, but to some extent an open prison camp: you couldn’t avoid one other,” Jason told The Guardian in February. "There are tensions and difficulties, I don’t know if they spilled from on screen to off-screen, or if it would have happened anyway.”

“There were alliances that formed and broke, romances that formed and broke, friendships that formed and broke,” he continued. “It’s a long period of time for people to be away from their family with an open bar and all the wildness being in Thailand allows.”
And while he wasn’t excluded from the drama, his wife Emma Hewitt—who was a spectator to the many personalities on set—had a few concerns.
“I can’t pretend I wasn’t involved in some off-screen drama,” he admitted at the time. “I was in some ways used to it, but within a couple of weeks my wife went, ‘Some of these people are f--king mad.’ I said, ‘No, it’s just a bunch of actors away on location, love. You’ve forgotten what it’s like.’”

Jason Isaacs
Looks like Lucius Malfoy missed the train to Hogwarts and instead landed at The White Lotus. That's right: He may look different without the luscious blond hair, but the Harry Potter star is returning to the screen as another uppity father figure, playing Timothy Ratliff, described as a "wealthy businessman vacationing with his wife and three children."
Isaacs has also made more recent appearances on TV shows like Robot Chicken, The Great and Sex Education (alongside his White Lotus costar Aimee Lou Wood.)

Nivola—who is dating Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann's daughter Iris Apatow—rounds out the Ratliff family as young Lochlan. But before hitting the shores of Thailand, he was in another show about a rich family at the beach: The Perfect Couple, playing Will Winbury, the son of Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber's Greer and Tag Winbury. He even costarred on the Netflix drama with White Lotus alum Meghann Fahy, who appeared as Daphne Sullivan on season two of the HBO show before playing Merritt Monaco on The Perfect Couple.
Nivola has also acted in White Noise with Adam Driver, Maestro with Bradley Cooper and With/In with Anne Hathaway.

Plus, she lent her comedy chops to Saturday Night Live as a writer from 2014 to 2015.
