The summer-long celebration of America's 250th birthday continues this weekend with a new IndyCar event on the streets of Washington, D.C.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix brings open-wheel racing to the streets around the National Mall, with the start/finish line in front of the United States Capitol. A course that also turns past several Smithsonian museums will provide a unique setting as the IndyCar season nears an end.

It will be the sixth street course of the season, and prior results make Alex Palou a clear favorite to take the checkered flag. He has won three of the previous five street races, in St. Petersburg, Long Beach and Detroit, and finished in second and fourth in the other two.

Will Palou do it again, or will another driver take the glory at the inaugural edition of this race? Here's when and where to tune in to all the action.

Freedom 250 Grand Prix course route

The 1.7-mile street course for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix will begin an end at the National Mall near the West Front of the U.S. Capitol, not far from where the stage is usually set up for presidential inaugurations.

Drivers will head north from the start/finish line on 3rd Street, then turn northwest on Pennsylvania Avenue before turning west on 9th Street, just past the National Archives. A quick jog east on Constitution Avenue for a block leads to a turn south on 7th Street before the drivers head east again on Independence Avenue at the National Air and Space Museum. The route veers left on Maryland Avenue, past the National Museum of the American Indian, then back onto 3rd Street and around again.
