One spot remains to be filled in MLB's final four, with the Guardians set to host the White Sox in a decisive Game 5 Saturday.
The visiting team has won all four games in this series, and Cleveland will try to buck an unfortunate trend that dates to previous Octobers: The Guardians have lost six of their last seven postseason games at Progressive Field dating to the 2024 ALCS against the Yankees.
Both teams have relied heavily on their bullpens in the series, with the White Sox generally relying on openers, then mixing and matching like crazy. Cleveland got just 2 1/3 innings out of its ace, Parker Messick, in Game 4 and used seven relievers behind him to close it out. All of which is to say, everyone has had plenty of looks at everyone else in this series, so the batters might have an edge in this one.
Of all the hitters stepping to the plate in Game 5, the spotlight will be brightest on Jose Ramirez. The Guardians' talisman went 0-for-6 with two walks in the first two games before breaking out in Chicago to go 4-for-9 with a double, triple, homer and five RBIs the last two times out. If he can keep rolling like that, Cleveland will feel good about its chances of advancing.
