One of the elite world major races, the Berlin Marathon will bring nearly 85,000 participants to the streets of Germany this weekend.

Marking its 52nd annual event, the Berlin Marathon regularly attracts athletes from around the globe. This year's race will represent 162 nations, with some striving for world records and others reaching the pinnacle of their running careers by just participating.

There's a stacked lineup of elite runners headlining Berlin on both the men's and women's side. Ethiopian Tigst Assefa will be chasing the women's world record, while defending champion Rosemary Wanjiru will be looking to snag back-to-back victories. 

After much anticipation for his return, it has been announced that Kenensia Bekele can no longer race due to injury. Men's defending champion Sebastian Sawe has also been forced to withdraw.

There won't be a traditional TV broadcast of the Berlin Marathon in North America, but those looking to follow along can turn to live stream coverage.

The 2026 Berlin Marathon will be available for live streaming on the FloTrack and the FloSports app in the United States and Canada.

Berlin Marathon 2026 start time

The Berlin Marathon is set to take place on the morning of Sunday, Sept. 27 at 8:30 a.m. local time in Berlin. Here are the start times of the races in ET.

• 2:20 a.m. ET— Handbike men's and women's race
• 2:26 a.m. ET — Elite wheelchair men's and women's race
• 2:45 a.m. ET — Elite race followed by mass start

Berlin Marathon 2026 prize money, purse for winner

The prize purse remains unchanged this year, with €30,000 awarded to each winner, €15,00 going to the runners-up, and €10,000 for third place finishers.

There are some performance bonuses on the line as well. Runners who dip under 2:02:30 (men) or 2:16 (women) can bag an additional €30,000. Set a new world record and you'll be rewarded with an extra €50,000.

Berlin Marathon 2026 route

As the Berlin Marathon enters its 52nd year, nearly 85,000 runners are set to take on route that has remained largely unchanged. The 26.2-mile run will begin and end near the historic Bradenburg Gate.

During the race, runners will travel through many of the central and historic districts of the city, passing by iconic sights like the Victory Column, German Parliament building (Reichstag), TV Tower and more.
