Where is Curacao? All about island nation making debut at World Cup 2026

1 hour ago 4

Curacao are the smallest nation in the history of the FIFA World Cup to ever qualify for the tournament. A Caribbean island of just 150,000 people and 444 square kilometres, they have defied every expectation to earn a place among the 48 teams in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.

Their squad is built almost entirely from the Dutch diaspora players born and raised in the Netherlands who chose to represent the island their families came from, players who grew up in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague.

Dick Advocaat, 78 years old, the man who took the Netherlands to the 1994 World Cup quarterfinals, will become the oldest head coach in World Cup history when Curacao kick off against Germany on June 14.

Advocaat guided the team to qualification before stepping away in February 2026 due to his daughter's illness. He returned to the role in May 2026 after her health improved and will be on the touchline for every game this summer.

But before any of that, where exactly is Curacao, and how did a tiny Caribbean island end up at the biggest sporting event on earth?

Where is Curacao?

Curacao is a small island in the southern Caribbean Sea, located roughly 65 kilometres north of Venezuela and 80 kilometres southeast of Aruba. Together with Aruba and Bonaire, it forms what is known as the ABC islands, a group of Dutch Caribbean territories sitting just above South America.

The island covers 444 square kilometres and is home to approximately 150,000 people. Its capital, Willemstad, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its colourful Dutch colonial architecture and the iconic Queen Emma floating pontoon bridge. The landscape is largely flat and arid but surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise water, which is where the national football team gets its nickname: the Blue Wave.

How far away is Curacao from USA?

Curacao sits approximately 1,900 kilometres (1,192 miles) from Miami, Florida, the nearest major U.S. city. That translates to a flight of around four hours from the east coast.

During the 2026 World Cup, Curacao will actually be playing on U.S. soil, with their group-stage games taking place in Houston, Kansas City, and Philadelphia.

What language do they speak in Curacao?

The main language spoken in Curacao is Papiamentu, a unique Creole language that mixes Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and English. You will hear it on the streets, on local TV, and in everyday life across the island.

Curacao also has two other official languages: Dutch and English. Dutch is used in schools and government, while English is widely spoken thanks to the island's thriving tourism industry.

How do you pronounce Curacao?

Curacao is pronounced KYOOR-ah-sow, where the final syllable rhymes with "cow."

Is Curacao an independent country?

Curacao is not fully independent. It is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, meaning it governs its own internal affairs, including taxation, education, and public policy, but shares a monarch, military, and foreign policy with the Netherlands. Citizens of Curacao hold Dutch passports and are part of the European Union.

This relationship has had a direct impact on the soccer team. Because Curacao is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, many Dutch-born players are eligible to represent the island, and FIFA's eligibility rules allow players who appeared for the Netherlands at youth level to switch allegiance to Curacao as seniors. Of the 26 players in their 2026 World Cup squad, 25 were born in the Netherlands.

How did Curacao qualify for the World Cup?

Curacao qualified through the CONCACAF qualifying process, topping Group B in the final round. Here is how they did it:

  • Games played: 6
  • Results: W3, D3, L0
  • Goals scored: 13
  • Goals conceded: 3
  • Points: 12, finishing above Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bermuda

The decisive game came on November 18, 2025, a must-not-lose away fixture against Jamaica. Head coach Advocaat had flown home to the Netherlands because his daughter was ill, and watched the game from his living room at 2 a.m., delivering his halftime team talk over the phone. The match ended 0-0, sending Curacao to their first-ever World Cup. Advocaat later described qualifying the island as "one of the highlights of my entire career."
