Where Brewers' 22-0 rout of Mariners ranks among biggest blowouts in MLB history

1 hour ago 3

The Brewers have once again been a machine in the summer, charging to MLB's best record and refusing to let a recent sweep at the hands of the Padres bring them down.

After taking three out of four against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, Milwaukee rode the momentum by hanging 22 runs on the Mariners in a shutout victory on Tuesday. The barrage of runs tied a franchise record.

A portion of the production came after the Mariners waved the white flag while trailing 13-0 and brought in infielder Leo Rivas to pitch in the eighth inning. Some position players know how to get outs, but Rivas had a rough night, allowing nine runs and facing some hitters twice along the way.

Seattle, meanwhile, saw a run differential that was above water earlier in August drop to -45 in a season the organization would like to forget.

Here's a look at where the Brewers' rout of the Mariners ranks among the biggest blowouts and largest shutouts in MLB history.

Biggest blowouts in MLB history

A 22-run margin is hard to beat and stands as a Brewers record, but nine games in the modern era (1900-present) have seen a wider mark:

The Rangers' record-setting 30-3 rout of the Orioles in 2007 stands as the all-time largest blowout at 27 runs, followed by a Red Sox win over the now-Orioles in 1950.

The largest blowouts not involving the Orioles came 100 years apart, with the Indians defeating the Red Sox 27-3 in 1923 and the Angels eviscerating the Rockies 25-1 in 2023.

Largest shutouts in MLB history

In the modern era (1900-present), the Brewers tied a record for largest shutout win with their 22-0 victory:

Only twice before has a team earned a shutout win by a margin of 22 runs: the Pirates defeated the Cubs 22-0 in 1975, and the Indians hung 22 on the Yankees in 2004. Shutouts with 20 or more runs are exceedingly rare, and the Brewers were one run away from standing alone with the record.

Highest-scoring MLB games by one team

The Brewers still had some work to do to rank among the highest-scoring teams in one game. The modern-era record remains in the hands of the 2007 Rangers, who enjoyed a 30-3 blowout of the Orioles, and several other teams have come close to 30:

Milwaukee did, however, tie its own franchise record with Tuesday's win, matching a 22-2 win over the Blue Jays from 1992.

For a team that prides itself on pitching and defense, the offensive explosion was a welcome sigh of relief for the Brewers. Milwaukee is now two wins away from being the first to 80 this season, with only a 22-14 finish needed to reach 100 wins for the first time in franchise history.
