Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has slammed the club's recruitment strategy amidst their poor form. He highlighted the pressure players face at big clubs when they step up from the likes of Bournemouth or Brentford.
The Merseysiders spent over £400 million in the summer on new players after winning the Premier League title last season. They signed the likes of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez. However, their form this season has worsened.
The Merseysiders started the season with some narrow wins but have now lost seven of their last 10 games across competitions. They beat Aston Villa 2-0 in the Premier League and Real Madrid in the Champions League. However, they lost 3-0 against Manchester City before the international break.
Sharing his thoughts on the Reds' form, Robbie Fowler said on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast:
"I got asked before the game, 'Are Liverpool out of a little bit of a rut?' - and I thought don't be getting carried away. Okay, they beat Aston Villa, but for 45 minutes Liverpool weren't great, and then they beat Madrid. So it's only 45 minutes in a league game where they've played relatively okay. I think they're out of the title (race)."Fowler also slammed their recruitment strategy, saying:
"Frimpong is the biggest example; he was brought in as a Trent replacement, but he's a wing-back. And Kerkez, he was everyone's favorite left back last year. When you're playing for Liverpool or Man United, it's different playing for Bournemouth or Brentford, because there's more pressure."The Merseysiders signed Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for a reported fee of £40 million.
Defender linked with Liverpool opens up about his future
Bayern Munich star Dayot Upamecano has been linked with an exit from Allianz Arena next summer following the expiration of his contract. The Frenchman has yet to agree on a new deal with the Bavarian giants and has been linked with Real Madrid and Liverpool for a potential free transfer.
He recently opened up about his future, saying:
“My agent is taking care of it. We will make the right decision. I am receiving good advice. I am focused on this season and my goals with the club and the national team. I don't have the headspace for it. I'm completely relaxed. I'm under contract with FC Bayern. I have goals. But I'm very grateful when clubs are interested in me."Upcamecano joined Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig in 2021 and has made 167 appearances for them, recording five goals and 10 assists.
