Return to Silent Hill is based on Silent Hill 2, the psychological horror video game series created by Konami. The original Silent Hill game, released in 1999, followed a father named Harry Mason searching for his lost daughter.

However, Silent Hill 2 shifted focus to a man named James Sunderland. Unlike typical horror games, these games use thick fog and terrifying music to create a sense of dread. The monsters in these games represent the main character's secret fears and guilt.

The film franchise began in 2006 with Silent Hill, also directed by Christophe Gans. It followed a mother named Rose who entered the fog-filled town to find her daughter, Sharon. While it used characters from the first game, it changed many parts of the story.

The sequel Silent Hill: Revelation, which was released in 2012, followed an adult Sharon (now called Heather) returning to the town to save her father. The upcoming installment in the franchise, Return to Silent Hill, goes back to the events of the second game which tells a separate story about James Sunderland.
