The New York Yankees are shorthanded at shortstop to begin the 2026 MLB season.
When they open their campaign on Wednesday night in San Francisco against the Giants, they won't have Anthony Volpe on the field.
Volpe is one of those guys who is beloved by some fans and detested by others, but his absence is still notable.
Shortstop is one of the most important positions on the field. Not having Volpe is a negative for the Yankees.

Why isn't Anthony Volpe playing?
Volpe is out due to a shoulder injury.
It's his left (non-throwing) shoulder that he initially hurt in May 2025, hurt again in September, and got surgery on in October.

How long is Anthony Volpe out?
Volpe isn't expected to be out too far into the season.
He was asked by NJ.com when he'd be able to take batting practice, and he simply responded, "Soon."
Who is Yankees' shortstop?
The Yankees plan to start Jose Caballero at shortstop in Volpe's absence.
He's one of the fastest players in baseball, and he hit very well after coming to the Yankees at last season's trade deadline from the Tampa Bay Rays.
