Releasing an 88-mph cutter, Ranger Suarez felt a "big pinch" in his back. It didn't stop the Boston Red Sox starting pitcher, at least initially.
Coming back with a 75-mph curve to Jo Adell, who connected on a high chopper past the pitchers' mound as the Los Angeles Angels outfielder earned an infield single.
Before the next scheduled batter, Jose Siri, entered the batter's box at Angel Stadium, Suarez departed with a strained left adductor. Could the injury jeopardize his opportunity to pitch in the July 14 All-Star Game in Philadelphia?
Suarez explained what happened during post-game comments to the media.
"With that pitch that I threw, I felt a big pinch around the ground area," said Suarez, as reported by Yahoo Sports. "I tried to throw another pitch, but still felt it. It's only been two hours. The training staff wants to see how I feel (Monday) or the next day, then we'll make a decision on where we go from there."
Following Sunday's 7-5 victory over the Angels, the Red Sox (40-48) remained in last place in the AL East, 12.5 games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays.
After losing his second starting pitcher in a week, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy likely took time during Monday's off day to review the team's pre-All-Star break options.
Red Sox's Ranger Suarez may miss another All-Star experience
Injured pitcher Connelly Early left his last outing with left elbow discomfort. Early tests revealed elbow inflammation, but the 24-year-old big leaguer is expected to visit specialists for additional examinations this week.
Injured pitcher Patrick Sandoval is expected to be activated before Tuesday's game at the Chicago White Sox and possibly start Saturday at the New York Mets.
Summoning Brayan Bello from Triple-A Worcester could be another option. In eight International League starts, Bello posted a 4.34 ERA with four walks in 18.1 innings.
Voted into the All-Star Game for a second time, Suarez said he remained more focused on returning to the Red Sox's rotation. The left-hander missed the 2024 midseason classic because of injury.
"Right now, I'm not thinking about that," said Suarez. "For me, the most important thing is just to be as healthy as possible for the second half. I'm not thinking about anything other than that."
