The Detroit Tigers have been having a rough 2026 MLB season, and it's been thanks in part to the injuries the team has sustained, especially with the pitching staff.
Tarik Skubal has been out for a while, so too has Justin Verlander, and Casey Mize might miss more time this season. But the most recent injury happened to their closer, Kenley Jansen.
But what exactly happened to Jansen? According to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News, the Tigers have placed Jansen on the injured list with an injury, recalling Drew Sommers to take his spot in the bullpen.
What happened to Tigers' Kenley Jansen?
"The Tigers today placed RHP Kenley Jansen on the 15-day injured list with pelvic inflammation," McCosky reports. "LHP Drew Sommers has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo."
This is some tough news for the Tigers, and a bit of an odd injury as well. He had an MRI on his right groin, and this update from McCosky confirms that his decision to leave his outing against the Los Angeles Angels was the right decision.
Jansen is going on the 15-day injured list and will miss a decent amount of time. After signing for $11 million this past offseason, Jansen has had a shaky season for the Tigers.

He has a 4.80 ERA with 19 strikeouts, a 1-3 record, a 1.20 WHIP, and nine walks across 15 innings pitched. He has seven saves, but he's blown four this season.
To take his place as the new closer while Jansen recovers from this pelvic inflammation injury, the Tigers are likely to go with either Will Vest or Kyle Finnegan. Detroit might also utilize both in the closer role as well.
The 38-year-old, who has 483 saves in his big league career, is going to miss a decent amount of time this season due to this injury. For the 22-34 Tigers, this injury is a tough blow for a team already dealing with some big pitcher question marks.
