A "ball and gun gamer" is a term coined by Twitch streamer "The Black Hokage," who uses the phrase to describe video game players who go against his tendencies, or, in other words, choose to play games in specific categories. The Black Hokage is a variety game streamer who has been active on the platform since 2016. Notably, nearly 70% of his content revolves around variety gaming.

As the term suggests, these categories are confined to games that mainly involve guns or balls. The Black Hokage defined the "ball and gun gamer" as an individual who "only plays games with balls and guns":

"I feel like it's pretty self-explanatory, but I will explain it again for the sake of this video because it's going to go on YouTube and get me lots of views. A ball and gun gamer is a term used for people who primarily only play games with balls and guns in it."

That being said, there is a clause to this definition. He added that the casual gamer who only plays games like 2K, Madden, FIFA, Call of Duty, Fortnite, and GTA does not fall under the term. The streamer mentioned that gamers who have "a dismissive nature about the rest of the gaming culture" can be referred to using the phrase:

"To be honest, for clarification, there's nothing wrong with that. You're allowed to play whatever you want. The term 'ball and gun gamer' is thrown on people who only play those types of games, and they have a dismissive nature about the rest of the gaming culture."

He went on to expand upon this clause, mentioning specific ball and gun games. As an example, the streamer mentioned Expedition 33, an RPG title that won nine awards at the Game Awards 2025, including Game Of The Year.

"If you're somebody who only plays 2K, Madden, FIFA, Call of Duty, Fortnite, GTA, and you come home from work, and you play your games, and you just enjoy your games and you're having fun, we're not talking about you. We are talking about people who only play Madden, 2K, FIFA, GTA, Call of Duty, and Fortnite, and then when we start talking about Expedition 33, they say, 'That sh*t's corny, only people who get shoved in lockers play that sh*t.'"

The Black Hokage spoke on the telltale signs of a "ball and gun gamer," while expressing his distaste for this specific category of gamers:

"You want to know the symptoms of the ball and gun gamer? The ball and gun gamer has no experience with anything outside of ball and gun games, but they have an opinion on everything. They're f**king morons. They're completely ignorant of everything that's goin' on."

Further, he suggested that these types of gamers are unqualified to speak on Game Of The Year-related matters, especially if they haven't played "at least two or three of those games nominated":

"Every year, it's five or six games nominated for Game Of The Year. If you didn't play at least two or three of those games nominated, why are you even in the conversation?"
