The top two teams in the NL West open a weekend series Friday as the Los Angeles Dodgers visit the San Diego Padres.
L.A. has once again been the class of the majors, entering the game with an MLB-best 52-29 record that leaves San Diego nine games back in the division even as the Padres come in riding high from a sweep of the Braves.
The Padres will give the ball to Walker Buehler for the series opener, with the veteran right-hander set to make his second career start against his longtime team. Buehler faced the Dodgers at Fenway Park last year while pitching for the Red Sox and had a mediocre outing, failing to make it out of the fifth inning while walking five.
Don't expect much length from him Friday but he should at least keep the Padres in the game; he has allowed exactly one earned run in each of his last four starts.
Roki Sasaki (3-4, 4.76 ERA) will make the start for L.A. as he navigates a bit of a roller-coaster season that has featured moments of brilliance but not much consistency from outing to outing.
Who will open the series with a win? Here's everything you need to know to watch.
