A matchup of reigning division champions awaits as the Seattle Mariners host the Cleveland Guardians on Friday to continue their season-opening series.

Both teams will look to build on their 2025 success as they begin this campaign. The Guardians roared past the Tigers for an improbable AL Central crown before falling to Detroit in the wild card series. The Mariners then ousted the Tigers in the ALDS before falling to the Blue Jays in a heartbreaking ALCS Game 7. While a new season is a blank slate, both teams have plenty of confidence entering 2026.

This season is virtually guaranteed to get off to a better start than last for George Kirby, who will get the ball for the Mariners on Friday. The right-hander didn't make his 2025 debut until late May due to shoulder issues, then got shelled in his first two outings before setting into a groove and pitching well down the stretch.

He'll try to contain a Cleveland lineup that got deeper with the late addition of Rhys Hoskins this spring, though face-of-the-franchise Jose Ramirez remains the man who makes the Guardians go. Run prevention is what Cleveland does best, though, as Stephen Vogt's team posted the fifth-best ERA in the majors (3.70) last season and will rely on its arms again this year, starting with Gavin Williams tonight. That's easier said than done with Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez on the opposite side, though.

It's Mariners vs. Guardians from Seattle on Friday night. Here's when and where to tune in.
