Jannik Sinner has made a surprising revelation about his upcoming US Open mixed doubles partnership with Emma Navarro. He admitted that before agreeing to team up, the two had never spoken to each other, not even exchanged a text.

The US Open mixed doubles will be played as a standalone event on August 19–20, just days before the main draw begins on August 24. The USTA pushed the event forward in hopes of encouraging more top singles players to join in without it clashing with their Grand Slam campaigns.

Among all the pairings, Sinner and Navarro raised quite a few eyebrows, as their partnership came out of nowhere. The Italian has now addressed the confusion, explaining that they met for the first time only recently at Wimbledon and that the US Open organizers were the ones who wanted them to play together.

"We met yesterday for the first time, and we had never spoken or texted each other before. The tournament wants us to play together, also based on certain combinations, so the choice was not so random," Jannik Sinner said during a pre-tournament press conference at Wimbledon.

Despite that, Sinner is looking forward to playing with Navarro and hopes he doesn’t let her down.

Jannik Sinner opened up further about teaming up with Emma Navarro for the first time at this year’s US Open during the same press conference. He joked that he hopes the American doesn’t get “angry” with him during matches, admitting that she’s much better than him at volleys.

Sinner said:

"I'm happy to play with her, and I hope she doesn't get angry since she is much better than me with volleys. I'm really happy to do this, I think it can bring a lot of entertainment to the fans." "It will be exciting, the couples are of a high level, and they won't always be the same. I hope that before the match we will have the opportunity to talk to each other again," the Italian added.

For now, though, both Sinner and Navarro are fully focused on Wimbledon, with the grasscourt Major just a day away. Sinner will begin his campaign against Luca Nardi on July 1, while Navarro is set to face Petra Kvitova on the same day.
