Cristiano Ronaldo's sudden exit from the Portugal national team has created waves through the international football community that are still rippling through the globe even as players have since returned to their clubs.
During the last international break, Ronaldo quit the team abruptly, walking out on the squad the day before they were due to face Denmark in the UEFA Nations League group stage.
Even as head coach Jorge Jesus and Portugese federation president Pedro Proenca reportedly attempted to convince him to stay, Ronaldo insisted on leaving as he felt disrespected by the federation's hierarchy.
He has since accepted any punishment which will be handed down by the national program, and a suspension is reportedly set to be handed down, but that has not stopped those with particular interest in the situation from speaking out.

What did Cristiano Ronaldo demand from Portugal?
Before his sensational exit from the national team during the 2026 fall international break, Cristiano Ronaldo demanded that head coach Jorge Jesus read out a list of bullet points during his next press conference affirming the strength of their relationship and issuing an apology to Ronaldo for asking him to warm up for a match and then not bringing him onto the pitch.
Ronaldo requested a list of eight different topics be read out at the press conference before Portugal's 4-2 win at Denmark on October 1, which he himself detailed in his latest statement explaining the situation.
Amongst the demands were a request for Jesus to admit that he "made a mistake by having someone of Pele or Maradona's stature warm up only to then not put him into the game," while he also wanted to affirm that Ronaldo is "exemplary, loyal, and professional."
Wayne Rooney expresses surprise at Ronaldo's demand
It was extraordinary that not only the list of bulleted demands that Cristiano Ronaldo made of Jorge Jesus were made public, but that they were released by Ronaldo himself, as if they were somehow meant to redeem him in the eyes of the public.
Instead, the reception to this revelation has been cold, and has painted Ronaldo as a demanding player who believes himself to be above the rest of the team.
To make matters worse, an old clip of Ronaldo discussing the sudden departure of Ricardo Carvalho from the national team has resurfaced on social media, in which he directly opposes the tantrum that Carvalho throws, one which turned out to be very similar to that which Ronaldo himself displayed this past month.
Former England international superstar Wayne Rooney has expressed his shock by these demands, and admitted he was taken aback by the whole situation.
"You can't tell a manager what he's got to say. That just goes beyond anything I've ever seen," Rooney said while appearing on The United Stand podcast.
The two individuals were once teammates at Manchester United, where they played together from 2004 to 2009 when Ronaldo left for Real Madrid.
"To undermine your manager, undermine your teammates the way he has -- it was just so wrong," Rooney continued. "To undermine the Portuguese FA, everything about it was just wrong. From a football point of view, from being a teammate and a manager, it wasn't nice to see.
"It comes to every player. You have to finish international football and unfortunately he's not dealing with it well. It's uncomfortable to see."
